Add another statistic to those summarizing former Congressman Dave Obey’s career in Washington: 1.8 million pages. Obey donated papers documenting his congressional career of more than 40 years to the Wisconsin Historical Society this week, with about 1.8 million individual pages of letters, notes, legislative research and records. The collection, including boxes of photographs and audio and video recordings, eventually will be housed at the historical center on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Researchers also will be able to request and review items at the Wisconsin Institute for Public Policy and Service on the UW Marathon County campus. The unique partnership will give easy access to Wausau residents, one of Obey’s requests when the papers were donated, said Rick Pifer, director of public services for the Wisconsin Historical Society.
